Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a boat even if I cannot sail?
Of course you can. Shackleton gives you the option of hiring a boat with a professional and experienced skipper. Thus, you will not have to worry about anything. Moreover, the skipper will teach you basic sailing techniques so you can familiarise yourself with the exciting world of sailing.

Do I need a specific certificate depending on the length of the boat?
You do, if you hire the boat without a skipper.

How many people can the boat hold?
It depends on the model and on whether you want to spend the night on the boat or not.
The Dufour 44 can hold12 people and sleeps 10.
The Dufour 385, the Sun Odyssey 35 and the Bavaria 36 can hold 8 people and sleeps 8.

What is the minimum rental period?
It is up to you. It can be as little as one hour or all the time you need. In Getxo and the Rías Bajas the minimum rental period is usually half a day, and in the Mediterranean a whole week. Feel free to ask us.

Can I choose the route if I hire the boat with a skipper?
You can always choose the route you most fancy. The skipper will recommend the itinerary according to the weather and sea conditions.

           How far can I go?
You can go as far as you want, but bear in mind that you need some time to go and some time to come back. In addition, if you hire the boat without a skipper, you must stick to the distance your certificate allows you to cover.

Where will I spend the night?
The decision on whether to spend the night in land or aboard the vessel must be taken among the crew and the guests. If the weather allows it, anchoring in a safe, quiet place is highly recommendable, as you will be able to see the dawn next morning.

What do I have to bring with me?
You must travel light: bring clothes suited to the season, some warm clothing, a raincoat and closed shoes with rubber soles of any colour except black, all in a flexible bag. Don’t worry about the bed linen, it is included. And don’t forget to bring sunglasses, sun protection cream, seasick pills, a towel etc.

What expenses will I have to cover during the trip?
In the case of a day trip, the gas oil and the moorings are included in the price.
In the case of a longer trip, don’t worry about gas oil expenses, as the engine is hardly used and consumption is very low.
Meals are not included in either of the two cases.
